GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 23rd November.
The Society has received a report that more Norwegian amateurs
are to be granted facilities for 50MHz operation as from 1st January
1987. Only about 30 Norwegian licensees are currently permitted to
operate on this band on an experimental basis. A power level of 25
watts is likely to be allowed for all except two small regions of
the country, where no operation will be permitted.
A special event station using the callsign GB2NEV will be in
operation from tomorrow (Monday 24th November) until next Friday,
the 28th. The station, which will operate on all HF bands, will form
part of the Neath Borough Council's Industry Year Exhibition. QSL
cards will be available for all contacts.
Listeners are reminded that the CW section of CQ Magazine's
world-wide contest begins at 0000 UTC next Saturday, 29th November.
It will continue until 2400 UTC on the following day, Sunday the
30th, on all bands between 1.8MHz and 28MHz. Entries should be
addressed to:-
CQ Magazine,
76 North Broadway,
Hicksville,
New York 11801,
U.S.A.
Entries must be postmarked no later than 15th January 1987.

LICENSING NEWS
--------------
The Radio Amateur Licensing Unit has asked the Society to
remind listeners that when applying for a licence they should use
the most up to date application forms. Use of out of date
application forms will result in your details being witheld from the
Callbook. The correct application form is contained in the 1986
edition of "How to Become a Radio Amateur".
Those renewing their licences by Bankers Order are asked to
make sure that their Bankers Order is up to date and made payable to
the Post Office, at the:-
Radio Amateur Licensing Unit,
The Post Office,
Postal Headquarters,
Chetwynd House,
Chesterfield,
Derbyshire.
S49 1PF.
If your details have previously been omitted from the Callbook
and you would like them included in future editions, you should
write advising the Radio Amateur Licensing Unit.
The latest class A callsigns issued as of Wednesday 19th
November were in the G0GE series. The latest class B callsigns
issued were in the G1WL series.
The installation of the Society's President for 1987, Mrs Joan
Heathershaw G4CHH, will take place on 17th January 1987. Members are
invited to attend this event, which will take place in the Gimcrack
Rooms, York and Ansty Suite, York Racecourse. Further details will
be given in the December edition of Radio Communication.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
During the period 7th to 16th November the recent high sunspot
count has declined and three days of zeros were recorded. New active
regions were rotating into view by the 14th and modest counts have
returned. The solar flux has also declined and is now varying on a
daily basis from 82 down to 71. Even so, levels for the period
averaged 76. The geomagnetic A index has generally been quiet. It
was down to only 5 units on the 9th and 10th and averaged 8 for the
period, its quietest for five months. The solar wind particle input
has been very low.
The INDA index for the period 27th October to 2nd November was
mainly quiet. However, between the 3rd and the 9th it was unsettled.
A level of 95 for the northern hemisphere resulted from the storm of
the 4th, when, by contrast, Meudon recorded an A index of only 53.
Both were up to Scottish auroral levels and an afternoon phase did
take place, with contacts to UQ2 by GM0ATQ. This was the best event
since last February.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND AND WALES)
------------------------------------
The F2 critical frequencies over the period have varied from
5.7MHz on the 12th, up to 6.8MHz on the 16th. Day to day variations
of 1MHz are now more common, but, all factors considered, these are
good levels. Seasonal effects are now also influencing overall
levels. The daily highs averaged 6.1MHz.
The darkness hour lows are also subject to daily variation but
are tending to a more stable level, averaging 2.0MHz. North-south
paths, in particular, are good up to 21MHz on most days and some
east-west DX is workable on the best days.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
During daylight hours the F2 critical frequencies at South Uist
averaged about 5.6MHz, though on occasions, such as the 16th, they
were up t0 6.3MHz. Overall levels are about equal to those of last
May. The darkness hours are averaging 1.6MHz and do not vary much.
Spread F, blanketing E and total absorption have been reported most
early mornings, making northern contacts very difficult.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
Geomagnetic conditions are likely to predominate for this week,
with unsettled conditions continuing up to the 28th, when sub-storm
levels could occur up to the 30th. The intense level of solar
activity is now tending to decline. Solar flux levels could well
improve as the more active side of the sun rotates into view,
towards the end of the week. It is difficult to predict how intense
this will be. Overall ionospheric levels are declining but could
well remain higher than this time last year.
For the south, daylight MUFs up to 21MHz are expected, with
darkness levels of about 6.5MHz. Noise levels after dark will mainly
depend on geomagnetic levels and could vary quite a bit from day to
day.
Daylight MUFs for the north may reach 18MHz but will be
affected by geomagnetic levels and may be lower on some days towards
the end of the week. Darkness hours are expected to remain much as
we have seen of late, with MUFs at about 6MHz. Geomagnetic
disturbances will affect levels, particularly towards the end of the
week. There is a 50 percent chance of Scottish type aurora on 30th
November.
